DAVAO DEL NORTE GOVERNOR IN HOT WATER FOR SPEARHEADING POWER COOP TAKEOVER

Politicians meddling in electric coops may face charges before the Ombudsman

For leading a privatization campaign calling for power giant Davao Light and Power Company (DLPC) to take over the operation of the Northern Davao Electric Cooperative (NORDECO), Davao del Norte Governor Edwin Jubahib could be charged before the Ombudsman for meddling in the affairs of a cooperative.

Politicians interfering in the affairs of an Electric Cooperative (EC) to its detriment can be charged before the Office of the Ombudsman for violating Republic Act (RA) 10531 or the National Electrification Decree, a top official of the National Electrification Administration (NEA) said, in a report in the online news site NEWS FORT.

“The case will go directly to the Ombudsman,” NEA administrator  Edgardo Masongsong  said in a virtual press briefing, Saturday (July10).

Under RA 10531, politicians cannot interfere with the operation and management of ECs especially in pushing for a “takeover” by private capital investors.

He said the politicians’ intrusion in the EC’s operations will hinder its improvement.

Masongsong statement is in view of the recent public declaration of the Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS) Mayor Al David Uy and Davao del Norte Governor Edwin Jubahib urging the Northern Davao Electric Cooperative, Inc. (NORDECO), formerly Davao del Norte Electric Cooperative, Inc. (DANECO), to give up and transfer the franchise to  Davao Light and Power Company (DLPC). READ MORE
