“Unya kung ma-privatize na, kaya nila makabetan ug kuryente ang mga non-viable areas? They cannot do it because they always look at the profit. Kung walay kitaon, walay serbisyo nga ilang ihatag, whereas kita nga mga elektrik kooperatiba ang atong misyon is service.”
This is the strongly-worded message of Department of Energy (DoE) Undersecretary, Benito L. Ranque, during his visit in Davao del Norte on July 19 in response to reports to privatize the Northern Davao Electric Cooperative, Inc. (NORDECO), which provides power to Davao de Oro and part of Davao del Norte.
The takeover attempt reportedly by the power giant Davao Light and Power Co. (DLPC) is being pushed by DavNor Cong. Pantaleon Alvarez and Governor Edwin Jubahib.
Aranque expressed a strong support to NORDECO, being a part of the country’s electric cooperatives, sharing the same vision when it comes to rural electrification.
