PDP-LABAN doubts Inday Sara running for President in 2022

By ROGER M. BALANZA

The president of President Rodrigo Duterte’s political party has bad news for fans and supporters of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte.

The presidential daughter, a top runner in surveys for presidential preference, may not be running for the top post to be vacated by her father in 2022.“

“I think Sara will not run, ” said Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi, president of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino- Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) . ‘That’s my own analysis. But I cannot speak for her, it’s only hypothetical.”

Cusi expressed his assessment. in an interview with The Tribune, over an emerging possibility that if Sara Duterte runs, she could clash in the presidential derby with Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go.

As Sara puts off announcing her 2022, despite her high survey rating and amid “Run, Sara, Run” movements sprouting all over the country, PDP-Laban is cooking up a presidential run for Bong Go with President Duterte as his running mate.

The Go-Duterte tandem, however, is still to be endorsed by the ruling party in a forthcoming national convention.

Sara Duterte, founder and chair of the Daao Region-based regional party Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HnP), had earlier said he would not join PDP-Laban if she decides to run. PDP-Laban also forbids support for a presidential candidate not belonging to the party.

Cusi said Go and Sara would be committing political suicide if they collide in the presidential contest in the May 3033 elections.

The collission, according to Cusi, would benefit the opposition.

“Senator Go and Mayor Sara have the same basket of supporters. If the two run, they would certainly divide the votes, especially in Mindanao,” Cusi told The Tribune, interview on Friday, August 13.

DESPITE OUSTER, Pacquiao, Pimentel still members of PDP/Laban

Senators Manny Pacquiao and Koko Pimentel , despite their ouster as acting party president and vice president, respectively, of the Partido (Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan PDP-Laban) remain as members of the ruling party chaired by President Rodrigo Duterte.

There are also efforts to reach out to Pacquiao and Pimentel, said PDP-Laban executive vice president and Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles, who was elected to the party post along with Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi as president during the national assembly held by the party in Pampanga on Friday last week.

Pimentel said the assembly and their ouster were illegal and said he and Pacquiao will hold their own convention in September to pick their candidates for the 2022 national elections.

“We’ve always invited them to the meetings. In fact, even if Senator Pacquiao… is training for his fight, we’ve invited him to attend the Zoom meetings so he can voice out his views. And of course, for Senator Pimentel, we continue to reach out to him from the very beginning,” Nograles said.

“So we still continue to open the doors to both of them and in fact in the national council meeting, there was even a suggestion to create a council of elders and one of the proposed members was Pimentel,” he added.

Nograles insisted there is only one PDP-Laban with one set of officers and that the leadership issue has been resolved through the assembly.

Aside from Cusi, other officers who were elected last Saturday were Nograles (executive vice president), Edwin Olivarez (vice president for National Capital Region), Raul Lambino (vice president for Luzon), Ben Evardone (vice president for Visayas), Charito Plaza (vice president for Mindanao), Rianne Cuevas (national treasurer) and Sen. Bong Go (auditor-general).

Also elected as party chairs were Astravel Naik (membership), Noel Felongco (education), Antonio Kho (finance), Richard Nethercot (legal), Interior Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya (public information), Reymar Mansilungan (livelihood) and Maria Katrina Nicole Contacto (youth affairs).

Pimentel/Pacquiao PDP-Laban wing to hold national assembly to choose bets

Against Duterte-Duterte tandem

By ROGER M. BALANZA

The tandem of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, for President, and President Rodrigo Duterte, for Vice President, in the 2022 national elections, will have opponents coming no less than from the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP/Laban.

Former PDP-Laban Executive Vice President Senator Koko Pimentel on Sunday said his group will convene in three months to reorganize and formally nominate their bets for the 2022 National Elections.

On Friday, a PDP-Laban faction led by vice chairman Energy Chief Secretary Alfonso Cusi held a national assembly and elected its new set of official. Cusi was elected president, while Pimentel and Senator Manny Pacquiao– the party’s former acting President– were ousted from their post.

Presidential daughter Sara is a top pick among PDP-Laban members to lead the party as standard bearer in next year’s polls, even as she belongs to the regional party Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP). President Duterte’s vice presidential run has been endorsed by the ruling party led by the President.

The Duterte-Duterte tandem has written finis to Pacquiao’s bid to be the PDP-Laban presidential candidate.

Pimentel said PDP-Laban national assembly organized by Cusi was illegal and his faction will hold its own assembly in September to choose its candidates for the May 2022 elections..

We will have a gathering in September,” the senator said.

“It will be similar to a national assembly. We will decide then if we will need to reorganize and maybe, that’s when we will make formal nominations for our party candidates,” he added.

Pimentel insisted that the recent events organized by Cusi were “unauthorized” and denounced by the national headquarters along with the PDP-Laban leadership under Pacquiao.

This includes the election of the new slate of party officials even with the attendance of President Rodrigo Duterte — the party’s chairman.

“The stand of the national headquarters and the PDP-Laban leadership under Sen. Pacquiao remains — the 31 May and 16 to 17 July meetings are unauthorized,” he said.
