CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The prices of pork in Northern Mindanao have increased as other areas in the country turn to the region for their meat supply in the wake of the African swine fever (ASF) threat, the Department of Agriculture-10 (DA-10) said Friday afternoon.
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – For his efforts to return the tons of trash to South Korea, environmental group EcoWaste Coalition conferred the “Environmental Justice Award” to Bureau of Customs Region 10 (BOC-10) district collector John Simon via an online ceremony Tuesday.
A new bangus specie introduced in Northern Mindanao fishponds last year has led to increased production, said the government fishery bureau.
The new specie Vannamae contributed to the 22.6 percent increase in brackish water production including prawns in the second quarter of 2007 in Misamis Oriental and Lanao del Norte, according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Northern Mindanao.
Aquaculture production posted, thanks to the notable recovery of the seaweed industry, a high production figure of 13,746 MT from 10,726 MT or an increase of 28 percent, said the bureau in a year-end report.
Bangus and prawn production was pegged for the period at 2,539 MT from 2,070 in 2006, said regional director Arlene Patanostas.
Overall, the fishery sector upped production by 14 percent from 30,838 MT in 2006 to 35,123 MT in 2007, said Patanostas.
Patanostas said better fingerlings, new feeding methods and BFAR and local government units support for expansion of existing ventures added to the good haul.
In a relative development, BFAR said an MOA signed by the Department of Agriculture with the Spanish Technical Cooperation Office would bring in fresh air into the fishery industry.T
he MOA on sustainable management of coastal resources would address marine environment depletion in the Bicol and Caraga regions.
