Unless we are united, we cannot win in 2022,” retired Supreme Court (SC) associate justice Antonio Carpio, lead convenor of the 1Sambayan electoral coalition, said during the launch of the coalition on Thursday, March 18. in Makati City.

“We have the majority, but the majority will become a minority if they are divided. So we have to remain united, and that is the unifying force,” he added.

“The Filipino people deserve a better government. There are Filipino leaders who can do a much better job in running the government, reviving the economy, creating jobs for our people, and defending our territory and sovereign rights in the West Philippine Sea,” Carpio said.

“This government is really incompetent. They’ve been tested and everybody is saying kulelat sila. So we have to offer a better alternative to our people because we don’t want the same thing to happen again, to continue in the next six years,” he said.

The new coalition gathers together a disparate group of Duterte dissenters who vowed to set aside their basic ideological differences to finally form the ever-elusive united opposition alliance.

1Sambayan is represented by democratic forces from the progressive Bayan Muna on the left and the Magdalo party of retired military personnel on the right. The new bloc is led by the powerhouse troika of Carpio, former ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales, and ex-foreign secretary Albert del Rosario.
