Palace declares June 26 a regular holiday

Malacañang  declared June 26, Monday, as a regular holiday to mark the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.

President Rodrigo Duterte signed Proclamation No. 235 making the observance of Eid’l Fitr as a regular holiday.

The proclamation states that the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos has recommended to declare June 26 as a national holiday in observance of Eid’l Fitr.

“In order to bring the religious and cultural significance of the Eid’l Fitr to the fore of national consciousness, it is necessary to declare Monday, 26 June 2017, as a regular holiday throughout the country,” the proclamation reads.

Ritual fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. Muslims are required to abstain from eating and drinking between dawn and sunset, as they use Ramadan for a time of reflection, forgiveness, and charity.
