CAYETANO JOINS DUTERTE
With Senator Peter Allan Cayetano opting to run as running mate of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos will have to hatch up with Vice President Jejomar Binay in the 2016 election.
Marcos on Tuesday, Sept. 29, said on television that he was discussing a tandem for his vice presidential run with Binay and Duterte.
At his press conference packed with Duterte supporters, Cayetano said he would be the running mate of Duterte.
Cayetano would later meet with Duterte in the evening.
Reports in Davao City say Duterte of the Partido ng Demokratikong Pilipino (PDP), will announce his presidential bid with Cayetano his running mate on October 2.
Binay of the opposition United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) earlier confirmed that his camp is discussing a tandem with Marcos.
Marcos and Cayetano both belong to the Nacionalista Party, which has another member Senator Antonio Trillanes also running for vice president.
Cayetano is the fourth candidate eyeing the vice presidency.
Earlier, Senator Chiz Escudero declared his bid as running mate of independent presidential candidate Senator Grace Poe.
Roxas, of the administration Liberal party, is still scouting for his running mate, with top pick Camarines Sur Leni Robredo undecided on the offer.
Marcos said he was not surprised by Cayetano declaring his bid saying the Senator had repeatedly expressed his intention to run for vice president.
Marcos said a Duterte-Cayetano tandem may not even materialize if the Davao City Mayor skips the race.
PDP president Senator Aquilino Pimentel III said the Duterte-Cayetano tandem was “a formidable team.”
Pimentel also said Marcos was last on the line of potential running mates for Duterte.
He said PDP was among the lead players in the ouster of the late President Ferdinand Marcos, the Senator’s father.
