Speculations are running wild that Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte could be gearing up for a grand battle to contest the mayoral seat in 2016 against his younger sister former mayor Sara “Inday” Duterte-Carpio.
The potential clash between the siblings of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte comes as a hot political scenario in the coming polls as Paolo today (Sept. 23) was reported to have tendered his resignation as a member of the Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod.
Paolo has confirmed he was preparing his resignation letter, in a late afternoon report by news reporter Cheche Diabordo in ABS/CBN’s afternoon news.
The local party and its predecessors Lakas ng Dabaw and Alyansa Dabaw, led by Mayor Duterte had dominated local politics for decades.
The resignation of Paolo was first reported by Davao City-based news site Newsdesk.asia.
Vice Mayor Duterte submitted his resignation from the party today. The reason behind, he said, was the failure of the members of the City Council, which he heads, to “afford due consideration to the efforts and achievements of the Council,” said Newsdesk.asia.
Paolo earlier said he would give way to Inday Sara if she decides to run for the top post she held from 2010 to 2013.
Mayor Duterte, who has broached political retirement in 2016, said he was trying to convince Inday Sara to run for mayor but he would seek reelection if the daughter would not rejoin politics. Inday Sara is into private law practice with hubby lawyer Man Carpio.
This week, Mayor Duterte issued a statement that gave hint there was something a-brewing in the Duterte front after he gave out names who could be potential candidates for vice mayor in 2016.
Without Paolo in his shortlist, Mayor Duterte named the vice mayoral wannabes as councilors Edgar Ibuyan, Mabel Acosta, Leo Avila and John Luoie Bonguyan.
Paolo is only is on his first term and has to more terms to go if he decides to seek reelection.
