‘PEOPLE POWER’ TO PUSH DUTERTE TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT
ONE MILLION SIGNATURES IN PEOPLE’S NOMINATION
BY ROGER M. BALANZA
To fuel more decibels to public clamor for Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to run for President in 2016, a senator said his party would issue a Certificate of Nomination naming Duterte as the peoples’ candidate in the race to Malacanang.
The “People’s Nomination” that hopes to convince Duterte to run would be signed by a million people, said Senator Koko Pimental, chairman of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino (PDP). Duterte is a member of the PDP founded by former Senator Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel, the senator’s father.
The People Power-type of nomination, ahead of the Comelec-mandated October 16 deadline for submission of Certificates of Candidacy (COC) for the May 2016 elections, would in concept parallel to the party-less tandem of Senator Grace Poe (for President) and Senator Chiz Escudero (for Vice President), who declared their bids this week under what Escudero described as “Partido ng Pilipino.”
Pimentel hoped the People Power nomination would help convince Duterte, who continues to place supporters in limbo over his political plan.
With the same intent, the Duterte for President Movement is holding a march-rally dubbed “Million People March” to be held in Quirino Grandstand in Luneta in Manila on September 26.
The opposition United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) presumed candidate is Vice President Jejomar Binay.
President Benigno Aquino has declared that former Interior secretary would be the candidate of the ruling Liberal Party (LP).
If Duterte would bow down to persistent clamor for him to run, he would be the third opposition candidate to be pitted against administration bet Roxas.
