The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is concentrating its combat operations against the New People’s Army (NPA) in Compostela Valley and Davao del Norte, now considered as the Davao Region’s remaining hotbeds of the communist insurgency.
The AFP has already declared Davao Oriental, Davao Del Sur, and Davao Occidental free of NPA presence and influence.
Maj. Gen. Eduardo Año, Commanding General of the 10th Infantry Division, at a recent edition of the AFP/PNP Press Corps in Davao City said their focus is now in Compostela Valley and Davao Del Norte particularly in Kapalong and Talaingod where the presence of the NPA is still evident.
Año said the AFP is facing the most active fronts of the NPA in the Davao Region where half of the rebel forces in Mindanao are operating particularly in Davao del Norte and Compostela Valley.
But aside from military operations, the AFP is also intensifying engagement with the local governments and the community.
Año said the efforts of the 10th Division is slowly gaining grounds, and is optimistic the number of NPAs in the two provinces and the entire Region 11 will be significantly reduced by 2016.
He said in just one month about 12 former NPA members surrendered to the AFP with their firearms. In order to achieve their goal in the campaign against armed groups, another battalion from the Special Forces will arrive in the region, Año said.
