Mindanao’s top rebel leader Jorge Madlos, aka Ka Oris, has been bedridden since early this year due to a kidney ailment, a military official said in a report on GMA News.
He is bedridden for quite some time now,” said Maj. Gen. Ricardo Visaya, former commander of the Army’s 4th Infantry Division who has been replaced by Maj. Gen. Oscar Lactao. Visaya said the report about the ailing Ka Oris came from information provided by communist rebels who surrendered to military.
Ka Oris heads the Southern Mindanao front of the New People’s Army (NPA), the armed wing of the National Democratic Front (NDF), the umbrella of leftist organizations in the Philippines. Ka Oris is also the spokesman of NDF-Mindanao.
Ka Oris, with a P5 million bounty on his head, is in his 60s and has been with the communist movement since the 70s.
Ka Oris is the most prominent rebel leader after Benito Tiamzon, the chairman of the Communist Party of the Philippines, and his wife Wilma Austria, the party’s secretary general, who were arrested by government forces in Cebu last March.
