Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago said she is pushing through with her plan to run for president in 2016 and has picked a running mate she said she had “loved from the very beginning.”
But Santiago rued that the object of her love, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, has not expressed interest in running for a higher position.
“I would love to run with Duterte whom I have always loved from the very beginning,” Santiago said Wednesday at a press briefing.
Santiago said Duterte would be an excellent vice president.
“I am considering Duterte in my opium dreams,” she said in jest.
A Davao City-based movement has been touring the country to convince Duterte to run for a higher position in the forthcoming 2016 elections.
The Duterte Pilipinas 2016 Movement wants Duterte to run for president and claims to have already gathered 10 million signatures in a nationwide campaign.
Duterte has repeatedly said he is not interested in the Malacanang top post.
The movement organized by Davao City village chairmen hopes that the strong support as amplified in the signature campaign for Duterte to run for president would help convince the mayor to change his mind.
Santiago, who can no longer run for a Senate seat in 2016, said seeking the presidency is among her options.
Aside from Duterte, Santiago said she would also be comfortable to have as running mate former Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro or Senator Grace Poe.
