Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte today, September 1, expressed dismay at the relief of Vicente Danao Jr. as Davao City Police Office (DCPO) chief.
Today, Sept. 1, The Philippine National Police (PNP) Region Eleven has temporarily placed Danao in the Regional Police Holding Administration Office (RPHAO). He was replaced by Sr. Supt. Marvin Pepino, who will serve as DCPO officer-in-charge.
Danao’s relief comes as the PNP XI Internal Affairs Service (IAS) is investigating him over a case filed by his wife for alleged violation of RA 9262 or the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act (VAWC).
But Duterte said the relief was harsh and PNP should have allowed the court to handle the charge against Danao.
Duterte hinted that police officers having a spat with their wife is common in the PNP and not unique to Danao.
There are many police generals who quarrel with their wives, said Duterte on GMA Davao’s Testigo news program.
Danao is my choice, said Duterte to emphasize his displeasure at Danao’s relief.
Danao has been focus of public and media attention the past weeks following a video uploaded on YouTube showing him having a quarrel with his wife.
The women’s rights group Gabriela has lambasted Danao for violation of RA 9262 and has offered to assist the police officer’s wife in filing a VAWC case. Gabriela also has spearheaded a campaign to have Danao ousted as DCPO chief.
