Davao City workforce not ready for BPOs


The Information Communication Technology Davao Industry Development (ICT-Davao) said there are many locators for Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) spaces in the city, but there are no takers in terms of interested applicants either for call center jobs or other needs of knowledge workers.

call center 5By first quarter of 2016, there would be about 30,000 additional spaces but there are doubts if Davao City’s workforce will be able to cope with the growing demand for IT-BPO talents.

Some 9,000 BPO jobs are available by 2016, said ICT-Davao.

ICT-Davao chairman lawyer Samuel Matunog said the region produces at least 20,000 graduates every year or 50,000 to include graduates from other regions that flock to the city to seek jobs.

But, we are not graduating employable workers, Matunog said. He is referring to English language proficiency, other technical competencies that would fill up IT application services like Gaming, finance, among others.
