Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has tasked Third District Congressman Isidro Ungab to look for funds for a multi-million peso sports complex to rise at the state-owned University of the Philippines – Mindanao (UPMin) campus in Tugbok District.

Duterte said the city government has no money for the huge

project and he is constrained to seek support of Ungab, chair of the House committee on ways and means and appropriations.

Davao City has only the Davao City Recreation Center (Almendras Gym) to hold indoor events but has no sports complex for outdoor sporting competition.

The Artica Sports Dome, which then Mayor Benjamin de Guzman started to build in 1999 had been mothballed by Duterte after he took over the mayorship in 2001, over claims the P300 million edifice sits on an earthquake fault. The structure remains unfinished and City Hall said it had already abandoned the idea of completing the structure, which today stands by its lonesome on a hill in Barangay Langub at the outskirts of the city.

The P200 million USEP Gym and Cultural Center at the University of Southeaster Philippines (USep) campus in Bo. Obrero, built by then Speaker Prospero Nograles, is also only for indoor sports.

Duterte said UPMin has carved out a portion of its campus to be donated to the city government for the sports complex that could accommodate both indoor and outdoor events.
