CITY of VALENCIA, Bukidnon – Barangay Catumbalon of this city celebrated its 7th Founding Anniversary on July 20 in a festive mood but with a different spin: a strong focus on garbage and nutrition.
For good reasons: July 20 fell on Nutrition Month; and Barangay Catumbalon is well known for its strong advocacy for environmental protection anchored on its ordinance on ecological solid waste management.
And its residents responded with energy to the call of Barangay Chairperson Arlene S. Macanim for good nutrition and proper waste disposal, which were highlighted during the celebration.
Barangay Catumbalon is widely known for its awards on solid waste management in the city, provincial and regional levels on top of its having been a nominee in the national contests.
One of the highlights of its annual anniversary celebration is a contest on recycling with contestants wearing attires from non-biodegrable materials like tetrapacks and plastic sachets. The contest is now being replicated by other barangays.
To give credit to the success of the barangay solid waste management program, Macanim has thanked purok leaders, senior citizens, parents, teachers, and residents for their support.
Macanim also thanked barangay council members Helen C. Acuesta, Gilbert P. Huervas, Juanito A. de Asis, William B. Noser, Domingo C. Lachica, Antonio L. Panes and Rizalito C. Decin for approving the solid waste management ordinance which imposed a P1000 fine and community service on violators. MEL N. VELEZ
