VMO beats 10th ID; PRO-XI wins
The Vice Mayors Office (VMO) and Police Regional Office (PRO) XI turned back their respective foes in the opener of the 2011 Mayor Sara and Vice Mayor Rody Duterte – 9th AFP-PNP Basketball Tournament to jump off their title bid on a bright note November 13 at the Davao City Recreation Center(Almendras Gym).
The VMO five trounced 10th Infantry Agila Division, 84 – 59 while PRO-XI downed National Support Unit-4SAB, 110 – 79 in the inaugural matches of the 12-team tournament from various units of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Christopher “Bong” Go, the executive assistant of Vice Mayor Rody Duterte, fired 22 points for VMO, which came out strong in the second half to rout 10th ID and barge its way to the winning column.
Rodel Bantilan and Roy Bangkas helped the cause for VMO with 18 and 15 points respectively.
Eduardo Mahilum paced 10th ID with 21 points.
PRO-XI shared an early lead with VMO as the Camp Catitipan-based dribblers drubbed NSU-4SAB with their superb run and gun type of play.
PCI Archie Zozobrado, Earl Escoton and Joswee Torregosa led the charge for the Police Senior Superintendents Nestor Quinsay and Ronald Dela Rosa-managed PRO-XI squad as they combined for 42 points with 14 each.
NSU-4SAB lost its opening game despite the huge offensive night of Police Superintendent Fernando Ortega, the 4th Special Action Battalion commander, who canned in 17 markers.
In the other match, Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao defeated Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, 93 – 75.
Vice Mayor Rody Duterte graced the opening rites. He was joined by the commanding officers of the various participating units of the AFP and PNP led by PRO 11 regional director Police Chief Superintendent Jaime Morente, Coast Guard Southeastern Mindanao chief Commodore Eduardo Gongona, Col. Lysander Suerte, Fire Senior Superintendent Elmer Asumbrado, among others.
A whooping P200, 000 cash awaits the champion in the tournament organized by City Sports Development Division and sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Mindanao Cluster B under Regino “Boy” Cua.
Games will be played every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at the Almendras Gym DCRC. (RJB)
